Swachh Bharat Mission
The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) or Clean India Mission, is a nation-wide movement launched by the Government of India on 2 October 2014 to accelerate universal sanitation coverage and eliminate open defecation. At the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), this mission is implemented with a deep sense of purpose, integrating cleanliness into the centre’s world-class operational culture.
I. Core Objectives at IPRC
IPRC aligns its environmental and sanitation efforts with the national vision to enhance the general quality of life through several key pillars:
• Hygiene and Sanitation: Promoting cleanliness and hygiene while working towards the total elimination of open defecation.
• Health Education: Adopting sustainable sanitation practices by creating awareness among employees, contractual staff, and the student community.
• Technological Integration: Encouraging cost-effective, ecologically safe technologies and scientific Solid and Liquid Waste Management systems.
II. Major Annual Observances
IPRC maintains a rigorous calendar of activities to ensure the mission remains a continuous priority:
• Swachhta Pakhwada (1st–15th February): A dedicated fortnight of intensive action including anti-plastic plogging runs, mass tree plantations and the provision of safe drinking water.
• Swachh-Hi-Sewa (14th September–2nd October): A campaign focused on reinforcing the concept that "sanitation is everyone’s business" encouraging mass participation across the complex.
III. Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability
As a centre of excellence spanning nearly 6,400 acres, IPRC implements long-term green initiatives to ensure a clean and sustainable campus:
• Green Energy: The installation of Solar Power Plants provides clean, renewable energy contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.
• Community Outreach: Cleaning campaigns extend beyond the campus to include nearby areas fulfilling the Prime Minister’s mantra of ‘Na gandagi karenge, Na karne denge’ (I will not litter nor let others litter).
